Senior IT Information Security Engineer

Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Senior IT Information Security Engineer to join our client’s team in Metairie, LA. The Senior IT Information Security Engineer will ensure the availability, configuration, efficiency, and implementation of information security tools, systems, and services. This role works closely with the Security Operations Center (SOC) to identify and respond to potential threats targeting the enterprise. The position requires expertise across multiple domains, including security, networking, and cloud technologies, and the ability to manage complex security projects. Availability for occasional weekend, evening, and off-hours work is required.
Responsibilities
Security Engineering:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape the organization’s security strategies, including hardware, software, research, and product teams.
- Research, design, and implement architectural solutions to meet security requirements and standards.
- Develop and execute defense-in-depth strategies to protect critical IT assets and data.
- Leverage expertise in networking products and technologies, including routing protocols, Layer 2/3 switching, next-gen firewalls, IPS/IDS, VPNs, SIEM, IAM, encryption, VDI, and mobile security solutions.
- Work with stakeholders and customers to address security issues and mitigate threats.
- Promote and enhance security awareness across engineering teams and business units.
- Assess risks proactively and communicate concerns to engineering and operations teams.
- Collaborate with the Security Manager to develop and implement security policies, processes, and procedures.
Threat Response:
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve vulnerabilities across the enterprise.
- Participate in 24/7 incident response and management efforts.
- Conduct security assessments and coordinate responses to threats and attacks on the organization’s infrastructure and applications.
- Utilize knowledge of desktop, server, application, database, and network security to analyze and mitigate threats.
- Lead large-scale security initiatives and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in information security, providing guidance and expertise as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least five (5) years of experience in security engineering, design, and implementation.
- CISSP certification is highly desired (or the ability to obtain certification within six months).
Technical Skills:
- Advanced understanding of the threat landscape and threat intelligence methodologies.
- Expertise in network defense technologies, TCP/IP networking, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and network security monitoring tools.
- Knowledge of secure engineering principles, technical security testing, and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl).
- Proficiency in Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix systems, including file system layout, log analysis, timeline creation, browser forensics, and file carving.

- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities with the capability to present to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Leadership capabilities, including prioritization and execution under pressure.

Regulatory Knowledge:
- Familiarity with information security standards (e.g., ISO 17799/27002).
- Knowledge of regulations related to data confidentiality (e.g., HIPAA, PCI DSS) and other applicable state and federal requirements.
Additional Information
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal travel required (0–5%).
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Ability to climb stairs and remain stationary (sitting or standing) for extended periods.
- Light physical demands, including adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Quiet working environment conducive to focus and collaboration.
